MOTIV™ Demonstrates High Patient Engagement in Real-World TKA Data Collection
What if the biggest barrier to improving outcomes isn’t surgery, but what happens after patients leave the hospital?
Healthcare has invested heavily in advancing implants, surgical robotics, and perioperative pathways. Yet one of the greatest challenges remains remarkably consistent:
Keeping patients engaged long enough to actually learn from their recovery.
In a landmark total joint arthroplasty study published in The Journal of Arthroplasty (Sutton et al., Rothman Institute), institutional compliance rates highlighted this industry-wide struggle:
- Preoperative KOOS, JR. survey completion compliance rates reached only 65% across all knee patients.
- 1-year postoperative compliance dropped to 46% overall—despite nearly $1M invested in dedicated registry personnel, software, and outreach teams.
See also Morrell et al., reporting from the AJRR registry that "among 1,264,863 outpatient primary TKAs, 70,677 had linked baseline and 1-year PROMs" — 5.6%
In contrast the MOTIV™ TKA Circle — launched this past February and with 362 cases to date and increasing daily — is already demonstrating that compliance thresholds that once seemed unattainable in routine clinical practice are possible when patients are meaningfully engaged in their care. The MOTIV™ data, fully verifiable to ground truth sources, reflects that difference:
- 96% pre-op compliance
- 86% 6-month post-op compliance (with surveys still actively coming in)
- 90% overall protocol compliance (1,036 completed surveys out of 1,154 due across all active intervals)
Combined with a carefully pre-structured Observational Protocol, that level of participation creates something rare in real-world evidence: true visibility into which patients recover quickly, which interventions make a measurable difference, and where real opportunities exist to optimize care pathways.
For example, the MOTIV™ TKA Circle data is showing — again with full provenance — an average 18.33-point increase in KOOS, JR. scores within just six weeks of surgery, representing a roughly 20% improvement from baseline.
The functional improvement is exciting. But showing that high compliance can be sustained across real-world workflows without substantial longitudinal attrition is the foundational breakthrough. Because when patients stay engaged, they don't just provide numbers. They generate the insights that actively improve care for the patients who come next.
